The Atlanta History Center is located on 33 acres in the heart of Atlanta’s Buckhead district and includes: one of the Southeast’s largest history museums; a research library and archives that annually serves more than 10,000 patrons; two historic houses illustrating over a century of Atlanta’s history; a two-acre midtown campus which houses the Margaret Mitchell House & Museum; and a series of gardens unique in both design and horticultural presentation in the metropolitan area. 

Exhibitions include: Turning Point: The American Civil War

Get a peek into the historic civil war held between 1861 to 1865. With 1,400 objects displayed in the 9,200-square-foot DuBose Gallery, Turning Point is one of the nation’s largest and most comprehensive exhibitions about one of the most important events in our country’s history. Real objects such as cannons, uniforms and flags make history come alive. Poignant photos and personal stories show how the war impacted those who experienced it. Display maps explain the sequence of events. Videos interpret what happened and why. Touch-screen computer learning stations can answer your questions and deepen your understanding. You’ll find this exhibition to be a powerful and fascinating experience, whatever your level of interest or knowledge of the Civil War.

Georgia State Capitol Tours

Constructed between 1884 and 1889, this monumental neoclassical structure with its gilded dome is the perfect expression and symbol for the capitol of the ‘New South’ as Atlanta considered itself to be after the Reconstruction. Along with many state capitols, its design and form follow architectural precedents established by the United States Capitol.”

The Georgia State Capitol is open to the public 8:00AM to 5:00PM, Monday through Friday and is closed on weekends and holidays. Guided tours are available Monday through Friday at 9:30AM, 10:30AM, 11:30AM, 1:30PM, and 2:30PM. From January 1st through March 31st, when the Georgia General Assembly is in Session, groups are limited to 80 visitors. Because of the noise levels and congestion in the Capitol during Session, groups will receive a 20-25 minute orientation in place of the 30-minute tour. Instructions will be given to groups who wish to view the House and Senate Chambers during their visit. Viewing the House and Senate can be arranged with the doorkeepers of each gallery during the visit.

Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site and Sweet Auburn District

This area served as the thriving center of black enterprise in Atlanta from the 1890s through the 1940s and is the birthplace of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Explore his birth home, historic Ebenezer Baptist Church and The King Center, where Dr. King's Nobel Peace Prize is on exhibit. The gravesite of Dr. King and his wife, Coretta Scott King are also located at The King Center. The Visitors Center features exhibits telling the Civil Rights Movement story.

Piedmont Park

Piedmont Park , with more than 180 acres, is situated between 10th Street and Piedmont Avenue in Midtown. The Park features woods, sports fields, Lake Clara Meer, picnic spots, walking and skating paths and annual events. These events include the Atlanta Dogwood Festival; Bark in the Park concert by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra for patrons and their canine friends; and Screen on the Green, weekly free movies in June played on a large outdoor screen.
