Centennial Olympic Park This 21-acre site was one of the most popular spots in the city during the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games. Today, year-round programming featuring concerts, family activities and artists' markets make the park a gathering place for Atlantans and visitors alike. Georgia State Capitol Tours Constructed between 1884 and 1889, this monumental neoclassical structure with its gilded dome is the perfect expression and symbol for the capitol of the ‘New South’ as Atlanta considered itself to be after the Reconstruction. Along with many state capitols, its design and form follow architectural precedents established by the United States Capitol.” The Georgia State Capitol is open to the public 8:00AM to 5:00PM, Monday through Friday and is closed on weekends and holidays. Guided tours are available Monday through Friday at 9:30AM, 10:30AM, 11:30AM, 1:30PM, and 2:30PM. From January 1st through March 31st, when the Georgia General Assembly is in Session, groups are limited to 80 visitors. Because of the noise levels and congestion in the Capitol during Session, groups will receive a 20-25 minute orientation in place of the 30-minute tour. Instructions will be given to groups who wish to view the House and Senate Chambers during their visit. Viewing the House and Senate can be arranged with the doorkeepers of each gallery during the visit. Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site and Sweet Auburn District This area served as the thriving center of black enterprise in Atlanta from the 1890s through the 1940s and is the birthplace of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Explore his birth home, historic Ebenezer Baptist Church and The King Center, where Dr. King's Nobel Peace Prize is on exhibit. The gravesite of Dr. King and his wife, Coretta Scott King are also located at The King Center. The Visitors Center features exhibits telling the Civil Rights Movement story.
